What I would like to say is that I rode bikes with Nick on Wednesday after work and went to the gym Thursday morning. I could absolutely claim that to you and no one would be the wiser, but that would be a lie and would defeat the whole purpose of what I'm doing. The whole point of this blog was to be held accountable for my training and what I'm doing on the path to completing the triathlon.
What really happened was that Wednesday morning I woke up at 5:00 a.m. to get ready for a work training session that had me on the road from 5:45 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. When I got home from the trip, I was wiped out and sporting a migraine. So Nick and I did not ride our bikes. In fact, I went to bet at 9:45 in an attempt to hold off the migraine and sore throat that were developing. Thursday when I woke up feeling the sore throat still, there was no Nike commercial playing in my head, just a NyQuil commercial featuring Drew Brees. As you would expect, the NyQuil commercial involved a bed and sleeping. NyQuil Commercial Courtney did exactly what Drew Brees did...she slept.
And I felt like such a slacker. In fact, my whole day was kind of off after that. I came into work with a PC that was newly reimaged and a day full of meetings. I was a grouch. And I knew I was missing some endorphins. So last night when I went to bed, I told Nick that if I didn't stay out of bed that he had to slap me.
No slapping was necessary because I woke up ready for the gym this morning. I got dressed in the dark, threw on my running baseball hat (it just makes me feel more focused and intense for some reason) and headed to the gym armed with a little apprehension of how my App would really work out.
There were two things about the gym experience that made it great. The first, weirdly enough, was that I ran into two of my fellow TDP staffers at the gym. Welch and DiGangBang (terrible nick name for one of the sweetest girls ever, but it sticks in my head!). It was nice to see them even though I was covered in sweat and visibly not in any sort of triathlon shape.
The second thing was the App. I knew that I would like the structure, but I didn't realize how nice it was to train with something. It was a little strange and first and I'm sure that I looked weird constantly adjusting my speed, but I felt great after it was over. The app uses an 8 week program to get you up to speed on the 5K. It only calls for three work outs a week and resting in between. I'm pretty sure that I won't end up sticking to that schedule. I'd really prefer to work out at least 4 times a week...but we'll see.
As much as I hate not working out more, I actually think that the two days off helped me repair and reenergize. Plus incorporating the App made me feel much more in control of my training. I feel less aimless. Hence the rebuilding and regrouping.
Also - side note before I get into the gym details - Allison asked me what kind of strength training I was doing. I told her I was using the machines and she asked me about trying functional strength training instead. I am scared and intrigued. Fill me in bloggers!
Take on Today's Training:
I went, enthusiastically, to the gym at 6:15 this morning. I used the "Run 5K" app for the first time. Today's work out was for a total of 30 minutes. I warmed up for 5 minutes and then repeated this routine four times: Jog 45 seconds (5.6 mph) Walk 90 seconds (4.6 mph) Jog 45 seconds (5.6) Walk 60 seconds (4.6). And then I closed with a 5 minute cool down. My total treadmill distance is hard to say because about 8 minutes in I accidentally pressed the emergency stop button. I believe that I would have been at 2.25 total.
After that I did upper-body strength training. I found a shoulder press machine today that I really like. I am nervous to do legs on Monday, but we'll see. I'm also hoping to get something physical in this weekend.
Distance Run Today: No clue...new training plan makes it harder. Walk/ran a total of 2.00 miles. I'd say probably .75 of it was running.
Continuous Distance: Whatever I can run in 45 seconds!
Mind: Excited!
Body: Feeling good today, though the back of my knees are a little sore.
